Facebook ‘Watch’ Tab

Written by Deirdre Keon on 16th August 2017

Facebook is continuing to challenge traditional television and have recently introduced Facebook Watch.

Facebook Watch will be a new platform for shows on Facebook. It will be available on mobile, desktop and for laptop and in their TV apps.

The launch of ‘Watch’ will help Facebook to compete with the larger video-streaming companies like Netflix, Amazon and YouTube by providing original content. Obviously, the innovation will be another savvy way for Facebook to boost their revenue by adding a new advertising source and to revolutionise that way in which we discover and consume video content.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently wrote that “We believe it’s possible to rethink a lot of experiences through the lens of building community including watching video. Watching a show doesn’t have to be passive . . . You’ll be able to chat and connect with people during an episode, and join groups with people who like the same shows afterwards to build community.”

Facebook comment that ‘Watch’ is a platform for all creators and publishers to find an audience, build a community of passionate fans, and earn money for their work’. At the early stages, publishers will have to be invited to ‘Watch’ but Facebook expects to let anyone publish to it eventually, just like on YouTube. Recent reops have also highlighted that Facebook plans to stop funding original shows up-front and will earn revenue by taking 45 percent of the revenues generated by ads.

The ‘Watch’ tab and several dozen original shows will start rolling out to a small group of U.S. users in the coming days and will be launch in due course into Ireland.
