Google Web Designer: Free to Download, Free to Use

Google Web Designer is a free tool for Mac, Windows and Linux. It simplifies the process of building interactive HTML5 advertisements. The FCDM team utilise this application on a regular basis to bring ads to life and deliver the best possible designs to our clients. Designers will experience ease of use with Web Designer, thanks to the animated timeline incorporated within the system.

Google describes the Web Designer as:

“Google Web Designer gives you the power to create beautiful, engaging HTML5 content. Use animation and interactive elements to bring your creative vision to life, and enjoy seamless integration with other Google products, like Google Drive, DoubleClick Studio, and AdWords.”

This advanced web application enables users to design and build HTML5 advertisements using an integrated visual and code interface. You can create content using drawing tools, text, 3D objects, and you can animate objects and events on a timeline.

The animation timeline includes features including animation scrubbing, timeline events and auto keyframing. Updated 3D features on the application also allow animation design to be taken to another level.

Once the design process is completed, a clean human-readable HTML5, CSS3, XML files and JavaScript code is provided. The applications use of syntax highlighting and code auto completion makes code easier to write while also ensuring fewer errors.

Google Web Designer also provides a library of components that enables you to add image galleries, videos (including YouTube embeds) and maps to your web sites and advertisements.

Additionally, Google Web Designer is integrated with Google Drive. This ensures ease of use when sharing Web Designer files with others. Designers will find this element of the application to be very useful, as do all of the members of the FCDM team.

Google Web Design is available for Windows 7+ and Mac OS X 10.7.x+. This installer does not require much space, just a few hundred Kb.

It is important to bear in mind also that Google Web Designer does have some drawbacks:

• All of the mainstream browsers are not supported.
• The application will not open HTML files that are not created by Web Designer.
• To fully utilise all of the features on Google Web Designer, you should have a good understanding of CSS3 properties and concepts.
